Addressing A Need

As more people completed treatment, Sunshine Coast Health Centre (SCHC) increasingly saw an unmet need for its alumni — recovery-supportive activities that are not peer-support meetings.

To address this need, SCHC and Sober Sports implemented its second activity, hiking, in June 2017.

Sober Sports also offers floor hockey in Victoria and Powell River. Lacrosse, jogging groups, and group fitness sessions are just some of the activities Sober Sports hopes to provide in the future. If you have any suggestions or ideas for a Sober Sports activity, let us know through our Contact Us page.

How to Participate

ALL SKILL LEVELS WELCOME. Hike difficulty ranges from easy to medium for the majority, with an occasional medium to higher difficulty hike (e.g. difficulty in regards to physical conditioning). We leave time for plenty of rest breaks.

Examples of easy-medium hikes and walks include Elk/Beaver Lake, Esquimalt Lagoon, Royal Bay, and Albert Head Lagoon. Hikes such as Witty’s Lagoon, McKenzie Bight, Mount Work, Lone Tree Hill have a bit more elevation change and may be more physically challenging.

The CRD parks trail page offers a good description of each trail. Items people can/should bring include water, some light snacks, appropriate clothing for day of conditions, and sunscreen. The hike facilitator will have some of these items on hand as well.

No experience is necessary for this activity. Just a desire to have fun, be physically active, and connect with other individuals in recovery or focused on healthy lifestyles.

Hikes take place every Thursday at 11 AM. Contact us or follow us on our Facebook page for weekly hike locations. Ridesharing may be available. Contact us to arrange a ride. Cost is $3/hike.

If you have any questions or would like a ride during one of our hikes, please contact us.
