Addressing A Need

As more people completed treatment, Sunshine Coast Health Centre (SCHC) increasingly saw an unmet need for its alumni — recovery-supportive activities that are not peer-support meetings.

To address this need, Sober Sports Victoria started its first activity, indoor floor hockey, in October 2013. Floor hockey continues to take place every week at Pearkes Recreation Centre next to Tillicum Mall. See our News & Updates for current times and locations.

We have yet to offer additional activities, but hopes to soon. Lacrosse, hiking trips, jogging groups, and group fitness sessions are just some of the activities Sober Sports Victoria hopes to provide within the next year. If you have any suggestions or ideas for a Sober Sports activity, let us know through our Contact Us page.

How to Participate

No experience is necessary for this activity, just a desire to have fun, be physically active, and connect with other individuals in recovery or focused on healthy non-substance using lifestyles. All equipment is provided. If you would like to use your own hockey stick, we only ask that it have a plastic blade in order to preserve the gym floor. Attendance is by drop-in. No registration is necessary. Please bring $3 to help us pay for facilities rentals and equipment upkeep.

Ball hockey is currently indoors on Wednesdays from 6 to 7 PM at the Pearkes Rec Centre (Fieldhouse).

Powell River Sober Sports has gone back indoors for ball hockey and other sports every Monday from 7-8 PM at the Westview Elementary School gym.
